Starbucks recently cut the ribbon on a new distribution center in Newark, New Jersey, creating hundreds of badly needed jobs for the city. Meanwhile, in Virginia, employment officials are celebrating after Amazon announced it would be opening two warehouses in the state.
The Bartlett Dairy center in Newark’s south ward officially opened its door to distribute all of the daily dairy and food products to the approximately 500 Starbucks stores throughout the tri-state area and Pennsylvania, according the Newark Star-Ledger.
Mayor Cory Booker said the center for Bartlett Distribution Services will eventually create up to 400 packing and transportation jobs.
In Virginia, online retail giant Amazon announced plans to open two distribution centers in the Richmond area, a move that is expected to create 1,350 jobs, according to the Richmond Times-Dispatch.
The Seattle-based Amazon will invest $135 million to open centers at the Meadowville Technology Park in Chesterfield, and at the Dinwiddle Commerce Park in Dinwiddle. The investment is the largest single economic development deal in terms of job growth made in the state since 2004.
Both local fulfillment centers will serve customers nationwide.
