Weidmann Electrical Technology Inc. announced that it intends to expand its facility in Urbana, Illinois, the Springfield News-Sun reported.
The $2.7 million expansion will create more than 20 new manufacturing jobs and will boost its payroll by more than $800,000. The company, which is based in Switzerland, currently has 140 employees.
"We're looking at increasing our capacity within the facility," said plant controller Mark Hunter, in an interview with the source. "Since we opened our doors in 2011, we've gone from initially 75 employees and we're expected to be around 164. We've just grown so much in terms of our business and because of that to be able to maintain increased sales, we needed to add more space onto our facility."
The company will be hiring maintenance technicians, forklift operators, a safety coordinator and line workers, the source reported.
Some 12.4 million Americans worked in manufacturing in April 2017, according to Recode, citing data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Employment in the industry increased by 25,000 compared to the previous year, though there were six million jobs fewer than there were in 1980.
