UK Employment Market is Becoming Candidate Driven
Windsor, 3 August 2005Management Recruiters International, Inc. (MRI), the world's largest search and recruitment organisation, has observed a growing number of companies experiencing difficulties in filling middle management and professional positions. As the UK economy continues to improve, companies are gearing up, and creating more positions. This has led to candidates having more choice and a greater ability to dictate terms and remuneration packages.
The following is a recent example of this emerging trend as witnessed by MRI:
A global automotive company was recently in the process of hiring at senior management level. Filling this position was proving to be a challenge as the prospective employer was unable to find an individual with the right experience and flexibility that the company required. Finally, they found the ideal candidate and having completed the interview process, he was offered the role of International HR Manager. The company wanted him to start straight away, but this would have meant that the candidate would have to forego his annual bonus from his current employer. Rather than risk losing this candidate, the new company decided to pay him the bonus they had paid other staff who had been with them throughout the eligibility period. The candidate accepted this offer and joined them shortly afterwards.
Steve Mills, Senior Vice President of Operations for MRI Worldwide said: "The UK market is increasingly becoming one that is candidate driven, as there are many more opportunities available to them now compared with previous years. Therefore candidates have the luxury to pick and choose, and will often be able to dictate terms and conditions. As a result of this market development, companies involved in the hiring process must ensure their processes are faultless, and also that they have the flexibility to move fast to arrive at a decision, in order to avoid losing that 'perfect' candidate. Companies should keep abreast of what their competitors are doing to attract new candidates, and review both their processes and remuneration packages on a regular basis to ensure they stay ahead of the game, and therefore are best placed to snap up new talent."
