Amazon recently announced plans to build a new fulfillment center in Salt Lake City, The Salt Lake Tribune reported.
The tech and e-commerce giant will add 1,500 full-time, hourly paid jobs at the 855,000 square foot location.
“It’s a great opportunity for Salt Lake City, the county and the state of Utah,” said Salt Lake City Councilman James Rogers, in an interview with the source. “This is exactly the kind of business Salt Lake City sees coming to the state in the Northwest Quadrant.”
The announcement follows approval by the Governor’s Office of Economic Development board last June of a $5.6 million tax incentive for Amazon. Under the deal, the state will reimburse the company for several tax categories if it creates 130 jobs “that pay 110 percent of the county average wage,” as The Salt Lake Tribune explained.
The facility is the first Amazon fulfillment center location in Utah. Following news of the move, shares in Amazon increased 0.8 percent to reach $960.93 on Wednesday morning, according to TheStreet.
“We are excited to continue growing our team with the first fulfillment center in Utah. This new facility will enable us to better serve customers and improve Prime membership benefits,” said Amazon’s VP of North American Operations Akash Chauhan.
