Saab, a Swedish defense and aerospace company, recently announced plans to move its headquarters from Ashburn, Virginia, to DeWitt, New York, Syracuse.com reported.
The move will create 260 jobs in DeWitt, which is located about five miles from Syracuse. The state of New York will dedicate $30 million to the new headquarters.
Operations in DeWitt will conduct research and development on unmanned aerial vehicle technology, according to the source. Many of the newly created jobs will be in engineering.
While the state government is investing money in the new headquarters, Saab will also be giving back, and will invest $55 million in the area, as well as create a technology transfer program that will support the company to create products that can be used by the government and other organizations in the industry, according to John Belanger, spokesman for Saab, Syracuse.com reported.
In addition to the new jobs that will be created, the company will also retain about 456 jobs in the upstate New York area, according to CNYCentral.
“Saab’s decision to locate the North American headquarters of its defense and security division in Central New York is a testament the region’s economic opportunity and our commitment to bringing the jobs of tomorrow to New Yorkers today,” said New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, according to the source.
